The Chirundu Criminal Intelligence Officer, detective inspector Columbia Masvaire, was on Monday convicted of criminal abuse of office by the Kariba magistrate court and sentenced to 9 months in prison. six months suspended for five years on the condition of good behavior and will serve an effective three months in prison.
In passing the sentence, Kariba resident magistrate, Tapiwa Banda, considered what the accused said in mitigation through his lawyer. He took into account that he was a first offender with dependents relying on him and that his contract was terminated by his employer.
It is the state case that on the 26th of September 2021, at the International Organization on Migration (IOM) tent at Chirundu one border post, Columbia Masvaire, being a public officer and in the exercise of his functions as an officer in the Zimbabwe Republic Police service, intentionally took away four female deportees from the custody of constable Nkomo, who was guarding and safe-keeping them awaiting quarantine. That is to say, he escorted and released the four female deportees outside the border entry gate for the purpose of showing favor to them, which is contrary to his duty as a public officer.
The deportees were supposed to remain in custody at the IOM tent until they were ferried to Harare for quarantine.
A Zimbabwe United Passengers Company ZUPCO commuter omnibus, which had been requested by Vimbai Veronica Mudzimu of the department of Social Welfare, to carry the deportees, arrived from Harare, but the deportees were not found and it returned to Harare empty.
